How do we get reputation?

Just a question.
I would just like to know how to get reputation because I sometimes see people with 1 or 2 reputation and I would like to know how you get reputation.

Under, your/somebodys profile picture (In a topic/post) you will see +1 and -1.
If you click on +1 it will give the person 1 reputation
If you click on -1 it will give the person 1 reputation point lower
