I see that all the time. Technically, The game is supposed to generate Sandstone under any unsupported sand, but often it doesn't generate correctly for one reason or another. For one reason or another (Probably the time and load it would take) the game does not check physics on all blocks until they are interacted with. Therefore, Floating sand!
