Yep, Skins can only ever work properly with a premium account.
Not true. When searching through the contents of the game's jar file, you'll find an URL that points to Mojang's skin/cape-server.
When changing this url and letting it point to your own fileserver, you'll be able to get an online skin/cape, instead of a local one.
To make it possible for more online players this requires a modification to the launcher, so that anyone can choose a playername they want.
But there's also another way to achieve this, and this method doesn't require you to modify/crack the official launcher.
The advantage of this is: (Theoretically) longer working versions, whereas cracked versions need to be updated (more often) ;-)
Yes, there are ways to get non-premium skins... But generally most people won't be able to see them. At some stage I'll probably set up a system like this in my own client. For the most part though, Premium skins are the only kind that all other players can see.
